Spirit Photograph is taken by William Mumler.

The self-portrait is taken at his studio at today’s 261 Washington Street. But when it is developed, a ghostly images said to resemble his long-dead cousin appears in the background. The photograph attracts widespread attention, and prompts a visit by Mary Todd Lincoln in 1875.*
